Cervicogenic Headache is a new syndrome. It is a pain to the head from bony structures or soft tissues of the neck. The trigeminocervical nucleus is a region of your upper cervical spinal cord. There are your sensory nerve fibres descending of the trigeminal nerve. But, there are problems to distinguish Cervicogenic Headache from an ordinary headache.

The latest studies show that the Cervicogenic Headache is a manifestation of your neck disorders. Very often this headache appears after a neck injury or trauma. The clinical features of it are very commonly associated with regular headaches, migraine or tension-type headache. Furthermore, this makes this syndrome very difficult to distinguish from other headache types.

In the world, the prevalence of Cervicogenic Headache is somewhere between 0.4-2.5% in pain management clinics. But it is high as 20% in patients with chronic headaches. Also, the studies shown that the average age of this condition in patients is 43 years. Furthermore, women are 4 times more predisposed for this syndrome.

The pharmacologic treatments for this syndrome includes medications that are effective for tension-type headache and migraines. For the moment, the side effects of the medication are the standard references from product package. But you should stay careful from the addictive medication. Many patients of the Cervicogenic headache become dependent on analgesics.

Furthermore, if the Cervicogenic Headache persists you can do a surgical treatment. There are a few interventions very effective against this syndrome. But the most common surgery is liberation of the occipital nerve from the trapezius muscle. In all the cases, this surgery is a pain reliever.

So, if you feel a tension-type headache you should talk with your doctor. As you can see, this can be a Cervicogenic Headache that affects your head and neck. You can prevent it using physical therapy.
