Take care of the good bacteria. Your body’s battle for immunity and good health is generally being carried out by prebiotics. Your GI tract represents over 70% of your immune system , and it is the home of good bacteria. If you want it to help you out and fight infections, however, you have to feed it. What you eat is very important when it comes to prebiotics.

The good bacteria from your body likes to fed on fiber-rich and nutrient-dense foods. However, anything that is processed can harm it and thus weaken your immune system. Not only your internal organs have to suffer from your consumption of foods that are high on fat or sugar.

At their core, prebiotics are a type of semi-digestible fiber. Therefore, in order to keep them safe you should eat two or three servings of prebiotic-rich foods. Vegetables like artichokes, asparagus, onions and leeks are recommended. Oats, barley, beans, wheat and potatoes are rich in carbs and they provide an ideal source of nutrition. No diet is complete without fruit, meaning that you should consume more apples, berries bananas and citrus. By including these in your diet, you can strengthen your immune system considerably.

If you have a vitamin deficiency, you can also take supplements. Remember, however, that supplements cannot replace actual foods; they are just a replacements. Unfortunately, even the healthiest lifestyle can’t protect us 100%. Sometimes it so happens for us to get sick, and the only thing we can do is to fight the infection. In the case of a cold, there are some remedies that you can try:

Chicken soup. It has anti-inflammatory properties and offers the necessary nutrients to fight off the cold.

Garlic. It has antibiotic effects and it can alleviate the symptoms of the common cold.

Honey. It can soothe a sore throat and it has antibacterial properties that fight throat infections.

All in all, having a strong immune system is important, because it keep up safe from various infections and diseases. As long as you have the right diet, you can be assured that you will stay healthy all year round.
