Problem Solving Strategies
Any problem you have, you should use a proper strategy to solve it. There are a few standard Problem Solving Strategies you can use in almost any math problem. But many of these strategies can’t guarantee the problem solving. They are just a few general ideas that might work for some problems. But there are problems they might not work.
Common Problem Solving Strategies
First, and the most common strategy is Guessing. Which is also divided in two small categories. Guess and Check and Guess and Improve. First one is the simplest one. You should guess the answer and check if it fits to the conditions of the problem. But the second one is a little bit more sophisticated. You should guess the answer, and then, check if it fits to your problem. If not, you should improve your next guess by the first guess.
You can Act It Out the answer of the problem. This is very simple to do as well. This is an effective strategy for demonstration purposes. Furthermore, children enjoy using this strategy. It is perfect for the logical problems. When you can figure out without calculating which is the answer. It is not guessing, because involves a few math knowledges.
Draw a Picture in order to solve a problem. You don’t have to be too elaborate. A simple picture with the details of your problem can help you to solve it. You can take your own measurement system to have more chances to solve the problem. If your problem is complicated, you can transform this picture in a diagram. This way you will increase the solving rate.
But the most important and useful from all Problem Solving Strategies is Thinking. Doesn’t matter what you have to solve, you should know there are a few steps to keep in mind. These steps are: be systematic, keep the track, look for patterns, use the symmetry and work backwards. If you follow these steps, you can solve any problem!
