French Onion Soup

This French Onion Soup is rich and savory, proving to be an excellent comfort food. If you caramelize the onions before you add them to the soup, the taste is even richer. Here are the ingredients that you need for this recipe, as well as how you can make it at home:

  • 1 tbsp of olive oilfrench onion soup
  • 50 grams of butter
  • 1 kg of onions, halved and sliced thinly
  • 1 tsp of sugar
  • 2 tbsp of plain flour
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 250 ml of dry white wine
  • 1.3 l of hot and strongly-flavored beef stock
  • 140 g of Gruyere cheese, finely grated
  • 4-8 slices of bread

French Onion Soup

First of all, melt the butter in a large pan, and then pour in the olive oil too. Add in the onions and fry them for about 10 minutes, until they become transparent and soft. Sprinkle in the sugar and cook for an additional 20 minutes. Stir frequently, until the onions are all nice and caramelized. At this point, the onions should have a really golden color and they are soft when punctured with a fork. Make sure that they do not burn during the last minutes of cooking.

Secondly, add the garlic during the last few minutes of the onions’ cooking time. Sprinkle the flour over the mixture too, and give it a good stir, to incorporate everything properly. Increase the heat and keep stirring while you add in the wine, followed closely by the hot stock. Cover the pot and let everything simmer for 15 minutes.

Lastly, turn on your grill and toast the slices of bread. Ladle the soup into bowls, and then top with one or two slices of bread. Shred the cheese on top, then you can serve your French Onion Soup.
