Can You Join the Military with Diabetes?

It is very noble and patriotic to want to join the armed forces and fight for your country. However, can you join the military with diabetes? Will you still be allowed to serve your country or will you be rejected? This is a question that many people with pre-diabetes and all other diabetes types have asked. It seems a bit discriminatory to reject someone based on these terms. Let us look at whether or not you will be able to get in on stay in the military under these conditions. It will be helpful to understand why you might get discharged or rejected.

Imagine that you are on the battlefield, maybe even in the hot desserts. Your only meals are those ready-to-eat ones, full of carbohydrates. You might even need to go long periods of time without eating at all. It is hot outside, no refrigerators available. You have no way of keeping your insulin cold. In addition to this, you are always on the move, getting little to no sleep. Your blood sugar will start to drop at a critical moment. Your team will have to tend to you in the middle of combat. Should they risk their lives to try and save you?

This is, unfortunately, the harsh reality you might have to face in the military. And most branches of the military feel this way about people with type 1, 1.5 and 2 diabetes. The general opinion is that you might not be able to survive during tough periods of combat. They are afraid that you might be a burden to your comrades. A person with type 1 diabetes will be discharged, unless they can prove that they are fit for duty.

They might place you in a non-combat position, such as an office or the mess hall. You might even remain in your current position is it allows a person with diabetes to work there. There are certain jobs that you will not be able to do. These include jobs in the front line or piloting planes and serving on submarines.

All in all, can you join the military with diabetes? The answer is really complicated and it depends on the position you want, as well as how you manage your condition.
