Homemade Calendula Tincture

Calendula flower petals have lots of anti-inflammatory and healing properties. This is why, when you use them topically, you can heal wounds, burns, cuts and even infections. A popular way to apply these petals to your wounds it through a calendula tincture. Today we will give you a step-by-step recipe for it:

Drying the Petals. You should always dry the calendula flower petals before you begin the tincture. All you have to do is to take the flower head off the stem and then leave it out to dry in the sunlight. For this, you can use an old, mesh fruit bag. It will prevent the flowers from flying away. A window screen also helps. Once the flowers dry, remove the petals and place them in an airtight jar for later use.

To make the calendula tincture you need the following ingredients:

• ½ cup of dried calendula flowers
• 1 ounce of distilled water
• 4 ounces of 190 proof alcohol

Take your flowers and then grind them using a coffee grinder. You can also use a mortar and pestle, although the process is more tedious. Through grinding, you reduce your flowers to a fine powder. Make about ¼ cup of it. Place the powder into a pint jar that has a tight-fitting lid.

Now, add water to the alcohol into a measuring cup and begin stirring. Pour the alcohol mixture over the herbs. Stir to incorporate everything and cover every particle of herbs. Shake your tincture twice a day for two weeks. On the 15th day, let the jar sit without disturbing it. The next day, pour your tincture into another container. Press the flower petals with either a tincture press or by using a cheese cloth. Press down to extract all of the essence from the petals.

Lastly, store this final jar into a dry and dark place. Use the calendula tincture only when you need it, but not more than three times a day. The approximate dose is around 1 to 2 millimeters.
