Atma Vichara Meditation – Self-Enquiry Meditation
– Step by Step –
Atma Vichara is a Sanskrit term meaning the process of investigating who we really are, our true nature. So, Atma Vichara Meditation is a type of meditation that helps you to find your pure being. This meditation has its origins in ancient Indian texts. But it was popularized and brought to the western society by Ramana Maharshi, in the 20th century. It is still very widely practiced by neo-advaita movements. And it is still teached and practiced these days by spiritual teachers such as Eckhart Tolle, Adyashanti and Mooji.
This meditation is based on the mystery of the “I”. It is the biggest mystery of our lives. Who am I? This is the focus point in this meditation. Going deeper and deeper in this meditation, you will see your pure self.
Atma Vichara Meditation – Self-Enquiry Meditation – Step by step guide:
You have to start this meditation in a place where you will not be disturbed. When the meditation space is ready, then find a comfortable position. Your spine must be straight. You can sit on the lotus position. But you have the option to lie down. However, be careful not to fall asleep. Or you can sit on a chair with your sine erect.
Now it is time to relax your body. Take deep and slow breaths. Start the relaxation process from your toes. And then slowly advance to your legs, stomach, hands, chest and then to your head and face.
When you are fully relaxed, you can start to meditate on the question “Who am I?”. You have to feel who your really are. You are not your body, you are not male or female, your are not old or young. Those are just labels. Feel the essence of your true being. Keep your thoughts clean by asking yourself “To whom does this arise?” everytime a thought comes up. When there is a feeling coming up, simply ask yourself “Who is feeling (the emotion)?” or “Who is aware of (the emotion)?”. This way you are challenging your own being to answer you.
The main thing in Atma Vichara Meditation is to keep focusing on your real self. Get rid of all the labels and see the light, your pure and perfect self. Practice it until you get the awareness of your true self. When you are feeling ready to get out of the meditative state, slowly bring your focus back to your body. When you are ready, open your eyes. Slowly start to move. And get up when you feel you are ready to.
