Arepas are a type of food made out of maize dough and it is usually consumed in countries such as Venezuela or Colombia. You will fall in love with arepas once you try out this recipe. Here are the ingredients that you need for this arepas recipe as well as how you can make the dish:
- ½ tsp of salt
- 1 and ¾ cups of masa harina corn flour
- 2 links of fully cooked chorizo
- 1 tbsp of unsalted butter
- 2 tbsp of canola oil
- 2 ounces of Cotija cheese
- ½ avocado, peeled and sliced
- tomatillo salsa (optional)
First of all, begin by heating up your oven to a temperature of 350 degrees F. Take a bowl and combine the salt and masa harina corn flour. Pour 2 cups of boiling hot water over it, and stir well. When you are done, stir in the butter, mixing until it all melted. Lastly, cover the dough with some plastic wrap and let it sit for about 15 minutes.
Secondly, shape the dough into little balls, then place them between 2 pieces of plastic wrap. Using a pan, flatten each ball carefully to form disks of about 3 inches wide and ½ inch thick. You can use your fingers to repair any of the cracked or uneven edges. Place the arepas onto a baking sheet and cover them with plastic wrap.
Take a tablespoon of oil and heat it up into a skillet over medium heat. Add in 4 of the arepas and cook for 5 minutes on each side, until the turn golden brown. Once cooked, transfer them onto the baking sheet. Using the remaining oil, cook the last of your arepas, using the same steps. When you are done, take the baking sheet with the arepas and place it in the oven to cook for 15 minutes.
In the meantime, slice the chorizo lengthwise, then cook it in the skillet for 5 minutes until it browns. Take the hot arepas out of the pan, cut them ¾ of the way through, and fill each with chorizo, cheese and avocado. You can drizzle them with tomatillo salsa if you want.
