Are Veggie Straws Healthy?

Today we will talk about something that many people are curious about. Are veggie straws healthy? At a first glance, they seem like they would be. However, is this really the case or are we being deceived? Should you really give these snacks to your children? Continue reading to find out more about this issue.

When you look at the ingredients list, we see the fact that they contain mostly powders and starches from vegetables. They do not contain any type of vegetable whatsoever. During the extraction process to make the veggie straws, many of the nutrients get destroyed. Many people associate veggie straws with actual vegetables. This is a clever marketing strategy, because by using the word “vegetable”, people immediately associate it with a healthy product. For many people, this product triumphs over potato chips.

Are Veggie Straws Healthy?are veggie straws healthy

Are veggie straws healthy, therefore? Not so much. The actual body of the snack is not made from an actual, sliced vegetable. It is simply a combination of powdered vegetables. Veggie straws are related only in the loose sense of the word to actual vegetables. At least, when it comes to potato chips, you actually get bits of actual potato. And they contain some of the nutrients of the vegetable.

Let us look at the calorie count too. Veggie straws have a high amount of them, reaching about 130 calories per serving. In addition to this, these snacks also contain a high amount of fat. Most of which comes from the oil used to fry them. The fiber content does not look good either, same for the proteins. You get close to nothing healthy from these snacks. You get a tiny amount of vitamin C and some iron, but that number is insignificant overall.

To sum up, are veggie straws healthy? Not at all. When you draw the line, you are better off buying potato chips. At least those contain proteins as well as fiber and even some vitamin B. At the end of the day, you are better off without them.
