Alcohol and Diabetes: What to Drink?

Alcohol and diabetes do not typically match, but you can still enjoy a glass from time to time. Consumed in moderation, there is no need to abstain. The limit is one glass a day for women and two for men. However, there are still some things to keep in mind. Sugary drinks may spike your blood sugar levels and drinking on an empty stomach is never a good idea.

If you want to know what types of drinks you can still enjoy if you have diabetes, here is a list:

Beer. A light beer contains only 3 to 6 grams of carbohydrates, compared to a 12 ounce beer that has about 15 grams. Take note that light and low carb beer both generally mean the same thing. They are also your safest choice when talking about alcohol and diabetes. Try to stay away from craft beers because they have twice the amount of alcohol and calories.

Wine. Recent research has shown that drinking a glass of red wine a day may help your body to use insulin better. Moreover, you are less prone towards developing type II diabetes. Make sure to drink it in moderation so as to not get hypoglycemia.

Liquor. Just a single ounce of alcohol can have up to 5 times the amount of alcohol of wine. While it is not rich in carbs, the mixers used for it can spike your blood sugar levels. Therefore, try to mix your liquor with water or seltzer instead.

Alcohol and Diabetes

Bloody Mary. Even though alcohol and diabetes might mix, Bloody Mary and diabetes certainly can’t. If you still want to enjoy this cocktail, then remove the alcohol and use low-sodium tomato juice.

Stay hydrated. This always helps with keeping you sober. In addition to this, be careful if you take insulin or other medication. Alcohol can cause your blood sugar to drop.

Always eat beforehand. Never make the mistake of drinking on an empty stomach. Food helps you to process alcohol better and prevents your blood sugar from lowering.

All in all, alcohol and diabetes can go hand in hand if you resort to moderation. Keep all of these tips in mind and you can still enjoy a drink from time to time.
