Why People Overlook the Acne Toner

One skin care product that many people overlook, more so than a moisturizer, is the toner. Ironically, this is one of the products that is essential for acne-prone skin. An acne toner is not a luxury product. Quite the contrary. It should be an integral part of your beauty routine. It can balance your skin and get rid of impurities that clog your pores. A toner’s main purpose is to balance out your skin’s pH — which is important when it comes to preventing breakouts.

If you have a few blemishes here and there, then a toner might be enough to keep them in check. That is, provided that the toner you use contains acne-fighting properties, such as glycolic or salicylic acid. Products with these ingredients in them prevent blackheads and the occasional pimple.

You should apply toners right after cleaning your skin and before you put on the serum, moisturizer or night cream. Acne prone skin is oilier than normal or dry skin and it is also more sensitive to fragrances and dyes. For this reason, you need ingredients that can balance out natural oils and reduce inflammation. Read the labels carefully and do not buy anything with harsh chemicals.

It is easy to ignore toner altogether and skip to the next step in your routine. However, incorporating an acne toner into your daily ritual is a way to ensure you are doing the most for your skin. If you have more than just a few pimples here and there, then just a toner will not be enough to clear up your skin. They are not powerful enough to do this on their own. Especially when they have to deal with stubborn acne.

In this case, your best bet is to use a more effective acne treatment. A good over-the-counter product is the benzoyl peroxide lotion. However, if you have doubts, always talk to your doctor and they can tell you all the best products to use.
